6/22/2006 02:42:00 AM|W|P|Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten|W|P|So, it is time for an update isn't it! We are busy with three things at the moment that interfere with blogging: The Fleck Closed Beta, a financing round and The Next Web Conference. I'll give you an update on all three subjects.
The Fleck Closed Beta
We started the closed beta 2 weeks ago and we received enough feedback to go back to the drawing board. We are planning to dramatically change a few things which might take a bit longer than we thought.
Financing round
As you might know this always takes longer than you think. It is also extremely important to the future of our company to get a good partner. One of the reasons we didn't invite more people to the closed beta (sorry!) is that our current hosting solution just wouldn't be able to handle the expected traffic.
The Next Web Conference
Yes, we are selling more tickets every day and the speakerlist is very impresive. We are looking forward to the conference and party after the conference and hope to meet a lot of you there.
In short; we are working hard, trying to keep focus and nowhere near the public launch of the software. Sorry to keep you waiting but I hope it will be worth it...|W|P|115097018664994439|W|P|Fleck update|W|P|bomega@gmail.com6/07/2006 04:39:00 AM|W|P|Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten|W|P|
Last night I found out that Gil Penchina is the new CEO of Wikia.com. I spoke with him briefly about Fleck.com when we just got started so I do have some interest in his carreer. Today I took a closer look at this service and what I found reminded me of a post I wrote a few weeks ago about Hidden Economies.
I think every visitor of WikiPedia.comorg at some point wondered 'How could I make money using this phenomena' and several people actually started services to monetize on it. Wikia.com seems to be a serious one and they might have discovered the Hidden Economy behind Wikipedia.
I wonder how it will turn out but I'm sure Penchina didn't jump ship (from eBay to Wikia) if he didn't clearly see it.
Do YOU see it too? Share it with us in the comments please...|W|P|114968041589280478|W|P|Wikia & Hidden economies|W|P|bomega@gmail.com6/10/2006 11:22:00 AM|W|P| BillyWarhol|W|P|Wikia believe in free software & Free BEER!! ;)) so they are definitely getting my Vote in the next Fleck Web2.0 Democratic World-Wide election*
;))
p.s. i couldn't find the "hidden economy" but i'm still thinkin*
outlaw ads widget*6/12/2006 05:12:00 AM|W|P| |W|P|Hidden economy? There aren't any ads, but perhaps donations. There's a hell of alot of pages though, and pictures. That must be alot of bandwidth.
Oh, and it's WikiPedia.org.
Not everyone is governed by capital though, although it may not seem so, the concept of the human 'spirit', and even humanity; is still somewhat alive.6/12/2006 06:02:00 AM|W|P| Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten|W|P|Hi Jackson, I agree that not everyone is driven by money but Wikia received VC money and hired a CEO. I don't think the VCs are doing this as a hobby and do expect to see a good return on investment. My question is where the money will come from at Wikia.
And thanks for the correction. I changed .com to .org!6/12/2006 12:53:00 PM|W|P| |W|P|Well I guess these one-topic Wiki's attract fairly big amounts of visitors with similar niche interests, like Star War fans e.g.
This should make these Wiki's very interesting for AdSense.
So, great one-topic websites for free, no cost for the content creating, and lot of single-track-minded visitors visiting your pages.6/12/2006 12:57:00 PM|W|P| Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten|W|P|Hi peter, you description reminds me of Squidoo.com. And you might be right about Google Ads but I would be disapointed if that was all...6/13/2006 03:25:00 AM|W|P| |W|P|Hmm... not sure. This looks typical like some project which should attract many, many users. Which results in many special interest niches (the long tail effect), which then could be monetized in many possible ways.
I only can think of highly targeted advertising, auction partners (eBay?), subscriber benefits (like what? Flickr has the bigger amount of larger photos, that is lacking here).
Oh, and wait, maybe some more elaborated profile matching, for subscribers only. Like e.g. linkedin.com: you get more search- and contact abilities if you pay the fee.
BTW, the service IS ad-supperted, see Advertising. And I'm seeing adsense stuff in the right margin (maybe just added a few secs ago?)6/30/2006 12:43:00 AM|W|P| |W|P|Well, I think it's pretty obvious. It has to do with one of those golden rules. But, of course, I'm not actually going to tell you about that.6/05/2006 06:44:00 AM|W|P|Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten|W|P|So, Fleck is now in closed beta. In the following days we will invite some of our readers to join our beta. If you are not included don't feel sorry for yourself. We only invite about a hundred people for the beta this week.|W|P|114951518739198959|W|P|Fleck Closed Beta: live|W|P|bomega@gmail.com6/05/2006 07:28:00 AM|W|P| BillyWarhol|W|P|Great!
Glad to hear U folks are still Cookin!!
Rock n Roll!!!!!
;))6/05/2006 06:21:00 PM|W|P| |W|P|At last!
Good to see atleast something out on the Fleck frontpage.6/06/2006 03:06:00 AM|W|P| |W|P|fleck is a search tool for wikipedia and google??? We waited all this time for an extension that search words on wikipedia and google????? :-(6/06/2006 03:24:00 AM|W|P| Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten|W|P|HJi Anonymous, 'search tool for wikipedia and google' you say? Nah, I wish it could do that. At this moment the main purpose is to show a window displaying 'Hello world'. Version 2.0 will actually display 'Foo' and 'Bar' and by entering a secret code these two words will be combined to show 'Foobar'.
Serious: looking up words in wikipedia and google is only one of many features of our service. I'm sure that will be very convenient for some people but it won't be the most important feature by far.6/06/2006 12:57:00 PM|W|P| |W|P|Just pinging in to say I hope I'm selected for the beta. Signed up a couple of months ago, so... *shrug*6/06/2006 02:37:00 PM|W|P| Unknown|W|P|Hé Boris, as an alfa tester the pizza was great, but now I like to taste that beta.6/07/2006 11:49:00 PM|W|P| |W|P|Hey! Something is happening at last! Good :-)6/08/2006 07:19:00 AM|W|P| i.|W|P|i'm a bit disappointed after all the buzz you created... putting and sharing comments on websites, why would i do that???
i hope the other functions add something more useful.6/09/2006 12:56:00 AM|W|P| |W|P|you sure are string us along. It seems to be working too. Enough already, we want in.6/13/2006 12:34:00 PM|W|P| |W|P|I have not beheld such epic hype in many a moon..
